It is based on the historical records from 1987 to 2012. Earlier records are either unavailable or unreliable.

Recommended Thermostat Settings
In general, recommended thermostat settings by manufacturers during the warm weather, it is generally recommended that you set your home's cooling system to 78 degrees Fahrenheit when you are home. It is estimated that for every degree higher you set your thermostat over 78 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer months, you could save approximately six to eight percent off your home energy bill, per degree.
If you will be out of the house for four or more hours, consider raising the setting so the cooling system only comes on if the temperature tops 88 degrees Fahrenheit.  In Spring, TX, keeping your home's temperature slightly higher and using the best settings for spring and summer can definitely help save you money.
Based on prior year temperature degrees for Spring, TX, a homeowner will combat hot and humid weather:
Thermostat Settings for hot humid weather:
  • Set the fan mode of operation to the “auto” mode not the “on” (continuous) mode.
  • Set the thermostat to the highest temperature that you will feel most comfortable.
  • A temperature of 78 degrees Fahrenheit or greater is recommended.
  • Set the thermostat to the “cool” mode.
Never windows and outside doors open in hot, humid weather while running the air conditioner. This will clearly defeat the purpose of the AC to cool you home and waste electricity and possibly damage the AC.
Thermostat Settings for cold weather:
  • Set the fan mode of operation to the “auto” mode not the “on” (continuous) mode.
  • Set the thermostat to the highest temperature that you will feel most comfortable.
  • A temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit or greater is recommended.
  • Set the thermostat to the “heat” mode.
Each year, it just takes a little adjustment on the thermostat – you will be surprised how you will get use to the cold and your body will get used to these cooler temperatures.
